Over the last week the focus has been on training - getting comfortable in my new boat, learning the ins and outs of the course, boosting the confidence and maintaining good feeling on the water.
This course is amazing, full of features but maintains clean eddies and fast water. The facilities are geared towards canoe slalom athletes and it’s no surprise Great Britain keeps producing medalists.
My sister and number one training partner Ella has now joined me. Ella is a two time Olympian having represented the Cook Islands at both the London and Rio Olympics. This course is very familiar to her while I’m playing a bit of catch up learning the water. She supports me endlessly on my journey and I am extremely grateful to have her in my corner.
On Sunday we had a planned rest day before the final week of preparation and ventured to the Cotswolds. The sun came out and we spent the day in an English countryside dream. Think rows of small cottages with beautiful rose gardens, Cornish pasties canalside, scones with cream and jam. Even happened upon a Bridget Jones Diary filming location in the dreamy small town of Snowshill.
Tapering training this week and trying to feel fast on the water. With one session per day allocated for training we have both managed to catch up with kayaking, school and uni friends in the city. We even managed to make it to one of Kanes World Cup matches vs Bangladesh, equally exciting and stressful! A great watch.
Excited to race and put the training to the test! World Cup one (the first of five in the series) kicks off Friday!
